Yokohama Tire’s AWS Migration

The image features the Yokohama logo with the company's name in bold white text on a black background. To the left, there is a stylized red "Y" formed by diagonal lines.

Project Overview

Yokohama Tire’s U.S. division needed to replace aging on‑prem VMware clusters that supported order management, IoT‑enabled tire‑sensor analytics, and dealer portals. Internal IT audits showed ballooning CapEx and a 14‑hour mean time to recover (MTTR) after hardware incidents  . Modern Labyrinth engineered a phased migration to Amazon Web Services, leveraging AWS’s Cloud Value Framework to model a 5:1 benefit‑to‑cost ratio—consistent with IDC benchmarks  .

Our Migration Approach

  1. Discovery & TCO Modeling – AWS Migration Evaluator scanned 180 VMs to build a right‑sizing plan that projected 60 percent cost savings by rightsizing and eliminating zombie servers.
  2. Automation‑First Landing Zone – Terraform and Ansible established networking, IAM guardrails, and patch orchestration—practices IDC flags as critical to large‑scale cloud success.
  3. Wave‑Based Workload Moves – Low‑risk dev workloads migrated first via AWS Application Migration Service, followed by SQL Server and SAP test systems.
  4. Optimization & Graviton Adoption – Post‑cutover, compute‑intensive telemetry apps shifted to ARM‑based Graviton3, cutting per‑instance spend by 63 percent  .

Outcomes

  • $1.1 M annual infrastructure savings—in line with AWS case studies reporting 50‑60 percent cost cuts after full migration  .

  • 50 percent fewer Sev‑2 incidents once automated remediation reduced human error .

  • Six‑month ROI break‑even, matching Cloud Value Framework projections of 10‑month average payback  .

  • Foundation for Industry 4.0 sensor‑data projects under Yokohama’s “YX2023” digital‑transformation roadmap  .
