The context
Check the file beyond its name.
A renamed copy can be identical; two files with similar names can differ. The interface needed to explain precisely what a comparison establishes and what still needs human review.
- Let the user choose the approved edition and its retrieved copies.
- Separate exact byte matches from differences that need investigation.
- Keep source notes and human review beside each result.
The engagement
What we took on.
Product ownership: Board Editions is a Modern Labyrinth-owned product. This case study describes product engineering, not a client engagement or customer result.
From scope to implementation
How the work came together.
-
Compare locally
PDFs are compared in the browser without uploading them. An exact match establishes identical bytes, even when a retrieved file has been renamed.
-
Make differences actionable
A different file is a review prompt. Content, metadata or export settings can change bytes; the interface explains the need to inspect both PDFs rather than claiming to show what changed.
-
Preserve a useful record
Optional check names, source details and review decisions accompany the readable report. The download is a record, not a saved workspace or document archive.

Take the check into the next handoff
The downloadable HTML report carries filenames, fingerprints, source notes and review decisions into a document that can be read or printed.

The same result on a phone
The result keeps the approved edition, comparison status and next review action in a single column.

The delivery
A working check with a defined boundary
The public checker and fictional example are live. The example demonstrates the workflow; it does not establish adoption or customer impact.
- Users can compare one approved PDF with up to ten retrieved copies.
- The tool reports byte identity and lets the user record their review.
- It does not choose the approved edition, explain visual changes or verify portal access, printed pages or delivery.
What connects the work
The takeaway.
A document check earns trust by making its evidence and limits as clear as its result.
